Minister denies disbanding central committee

The Prevention and Control of Illegal Trading Central Committee will not be disbanded, according to Union Commerce Minister Win Myint who also served as the central committee’s chairperson.

He denied a news report that plans are underway to form a similar committee after the central committee is disbanded.

The main task of the committee is to effectively control illegal trade and give protection to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Since its establishment, the committee has launched several crackdowns on illegal trade, he added.

“Despite the government’s crackdown, illegal trade still exits. According to the trade figures, trade deficits between Myanmar-China and Myanmar-Thailand are very high. Now, Myanmar is holding talks with China and Thailand on how to effectively control illegal trade along the border. Myanmar suffered a trade deficit of US$1 billion with Thailand and about US$1.5 billion with China,” he said.

The mobile team, which was set up in 2012-2013 FY, has been cracking down on illegal commodities on Muse-Mandalay and Myawaddy-Yangon routes. The mobile team has seized commodities worth Ks30 billion during the period of 2012-2013 FY to 2014-2015 FY.
