The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) allowed Myanmar to host its qualifying group matches in 2020 AFC U-23 Championship, sources said.
The qualifying stage will be held as East Asia Zone and West Asia Zone and Myanmar U-23 team will be competing in East Asia Zone. Nearly 40 teams will be included in the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship.
A total of five groups will be divided in East Asia Zone and West Asia Zone each. Myanmar is hosting the AFC U-23 Championship qualifying group for three times and they hosted the tournament in 2014 and 2018 AFC U-23 Championships qualifying group. The qualifying group matches will be held from next year. Groups with four teams will be held from .
Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) hosted the previous qualifying matches in Thuwanna Stadium in Yangon and this year qualifying matches will also be held at the same location. Myanmar U-22 team will be taking part in the competition and Kyi Lwin has been assigned as head coach of Myanmar team. Myanmar team qualified for the AFC U-23 Championship in 2014 once but they failed to qualify in 2014 and 2018 competitions.
Myanmar team lost Australian team 3-0 in their final match in the group in June 2017 and as they failed to qualify in 2018 AFC U-23 Championship, they were not included in the top five of second place teams.
Thailand will host the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship and they will compete in the qualifying group. Myanmar U-22 team will spend their time in camp for training at the end of this year and Myanmar U-22 (b) team will compete in an invitation cup held in China.
