6.8 magnitude quake causes panic in Myanmar
Published on Sunday, 11 November 2012 13:13
A strong earthquake struck central Myanmar, centering at 35 miles northeast of Shwebo Township with 6.8 on the Richter scale this morning, according to the announcement of the Meteorology and Hydrology Department.
Seismic wave also affected to the nearby townships such as Sagain, Pyin Oo Lwin and Meikhtila.
“When we review the earthquake zone between Singu and Thabeikkyin townships, the Sagaing earthquake in 1956 was 7 Richter scale and the Tagaung earthquake in 1991 was 7 Richter scale. The quake this morning was the strongest one after 1991. Some seismic waves occurred along the tectonic plates. This earthquake would be the precursor one of stronger quakes,” said Soe Thura Tun, Secretary of Myanmar Seismic Committee.
The damages were most serious in nearby Shwebo Township. Four workers died, and 24 were injured in the earthquake at the construction site of Yatanar Theinga bridge(Ayewaddy) in Kyauk Myaung sub-township of Shwebo, according to the Eleven Media Group’s reporter.
Two Buddhist monasteries in Kyauk Myaung sub-township collapsed, causing two dead.
About ten pot-making workshops were also damaged in nearby Nwe Nyein Township.
The ‘diamond bud’ of Myat Nyi Naung Pagoda in Chanmya Tharzi township of Mandalay fell to the ground due to the tremor.
Some other religious edifices in Mandalay were also damaged.
“Fluorescent lamps, fans and cupboards were trembling. The quake was so strong that we cannot stand. People had to run out the open spaces. We are worried about the possible aftershocks,” said a resident in Mandalay.
Concrete walls of houses split out in Sagaing Township, and eight-inch major diamond buds and three-inch surrounding diamond buds went down to the ground.
“The seismic waves spread to Mahlaing, Wundwin and Thazi townships. Other township offices of this district have confirmed that there was no dead,” said Kyaw San, Fire Brigade Officer of Meikhitla Township.
The shallow quake also struck Meikhitla Township near Mandalay for some seconds at 7:45 am this morning, but there was no dead.
“We realised the quake shock only when fluorescent lamps were swaying. First I thought that I felt dizzy in the bed. The earthquake trembled about 10 seconds,” said Thi Thi Aung from Meikhitla Township.
This quake was 14th tremor in Myanmar in 2012.
