Yangon Region saw 55 car accidents during the four-day Thingyan water festival, killing 17 people and injuring 111 others, according to a source from no.2 traffic police.
This year's death toll was higher than in 2016 when 40 car accidents occurred leaving 13 dead and injuring 52.
This year, Yangon saw one death and 29 injured in nine car accidents on the first day of the festival, four dead and 34 injured in 11 accidents on the second day, six dead and 21 injured in 18 accidents on the third day and six dead and 27 injured in 17 accident on the last day, said the traffic police.
The Ministry of Information said during Thingyan, the whole country saw 1,200 criminal cases in which 285 died and 1,037 were injured.
