Locals from Zayankyi village in northern Shan State are taking shelter at an administrative office in Namhsan to avoid the fighting which broke out between the army and the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) on January 10, sources said.

The fighting started around 12 pm and finished at 2 pm.

A local from Zayankyi said that the entry of armed forces forced them to close their shops, schools and many moved to nearby villages. There is fear that fresh fighting will restart.

“The locals came to the administrative office in Namhsan. We haven’t been able to make contact with them as they are running away from the fighting,” a resident of Hsipaw said.
