Ministry of Health and Sports has allocated Ks 1.5 billion  for medical research efforts for 2018-2019 fiscal year.

In 2017-2018 FY, the ministry allotted Ks 1 billion for medical research funds. From April to September this year, the ministry allocated a budget of Ks 500 million. The minister will conduct more researches applicable to public health, cures, traditional medicines and sports, rather than other types of basic researches which can cost money and not produce practical fruitful results in a short period of time.

An official from the Medical Research Department said: “The health sector mainly uses medical expenditures for treatment, vaccination and eradication. The ministry was unable to allocate budgets to medical research sector as expected. Since the previous fiscal year, the ministry has increased funding for medical research from below one per cent to one-to-two per cent. There are 16 medical and medical-related universities nationwide. The ministry allocates the budgets to researchers in 16 universities.”

On June 23, 2017, the ministry formed a committee which will scrutinize and choose the cost-effective and qualified research works.
