MYAWADY- Due to landslides caused by heavy rain on the new Asia Highway of Myawady-Kawkareik road, it has been blocked for hours since the beginning of morning on July9th.
The Kawkareik Township administrator, Township Police Officer as well as head of Kawkareik Police Station and fire brigade members, MP from Myawady Township, Thingannyinaung Police Station and social welfare organizations have been clearing away the debris.
“Landslide occurred around 2am of July 9th due to heavy rains. We arrived at the scene about 3:20am. We don’t yet know when the road will open. If machines can help with the clearance, the road may open this morning,” said a traveller.
“Under the guidance of the Myawady District Administrator, we about 80 people including bulldozers are now going to the landslide. Likewise, Kawkareik Township also sent mini backhoes. The road may open up this morning with the assistance of machines,” said Ko Wa Tok from Social Welfare Association in Myawady Township.
According to MP Thant Zin Aung, another landslide occurred on the road while clearing away this one, leading to authorities to decide on building a feeder and allowing the usage of the old mountain route.
Myawady-Kawkareik Asia New Road was opened on October 30th of 2015. The old Myawady-Kawkareik road spans only 40 miles and the traders have to wait on days to allow ascend or descend from the mountain path.
The new Asia Road lasts a day trip if travelling from Myawady to Yangon with about 8 hours travel time.
