The government has allotted K500 million for medical research during six months, said Dr Kyaw Zin Thant, director-general of Medical Research Department.
“In 2018, the fiscal period is six months due to a change to the fiscal year. We will ask for a budget of K500 million for six months instead of K100 million. The department will ask for K2 billion for the 2018-19 fiscal year beginning on October 1,” he added.
The ministry will conduct more research on fields that can be applied to public health, cures, traditional medicine and sports, rather than basic research.
“We will spend our budget on practical research. We don’t need to buy machines as our research targets the health system. We can produce results in a short period of time,” he continued.
On June 23, 2017, the ministry formed a team to review research proposals to provide cost-saving, effective and qualified research.
