The Ministry of Transport and Communications says the construction of a new airport in Falam, Chin
State has now begun.
At the moment, land transport is the only means of connection with the state.
During the rainy season, roads connecting to the state are often cut off or partially unusable due to landslides.
An MP representing Htantalan Township Constituency proposed construction of the new airport, which was subsequently planned with input from the public in Chin State.
Officials from the ministry went on a geology field trip to find a suitable place to build the new airport near Hakha, the capital of Chin State and found one in Falam, a town close to the Chin capital.
The first round of land surveying was done in 2012 for the construction and another alignment survey was
carried out in 2013.
The site is located 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometres) northwest of Falam and 6000 feet above sea level.
