The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has shut down two drug stores in Sagaing Region for six months.

Dr Kaung Htet Oo, administrator at the Kalay District FDA, said: “Last month we ordered two drug stores to close for six months for violating our rules.”

He said store owners should not sell unlicensed drugs and people ought to check the labels of medicines before buying.

“We’re inspecting drug stores since April and found unlicensed and expired pharmaceutical products. I’d like to advise people not to use controlled drugs without a doctor’s prescription.

“We will also check the restaurants and work with owners about the WHO’s [World Health Organisation] practices.”

Kalay Township had more than 60 drug stores and 100 restaurants, he added.
