Exhibition celebrates artist Win Pe’s return to Myanmar


Veteran artist Win Pe’s solo watercolour art exhibitionis on view until this Sunday at River Ayeyarwaddy Gallery.

“This is my second solo exhibition since I came back to Myanmar. On view are over 50 watercolour paintings, all colourful ones that will give pleasant feelings [to the visitors]. I’ve also put together a book featuring paintings from the exhibition and others not included in the exhibit,” said Win Pe.

K-pop idol group 4Minute to perform in Myanmar

In a video message to their Myanmar fans, the 5-member girl group said: “4Minute is holding a concert in Myanmar for the first time. This is groundbreaking as it is our first concert and we will be performing our latest hits.”

Titled “2015 4Minute Fan Bash in Myanmar”, the concert will be held at Myanmar Event Park on April 4. Tickets come in five categories: Ks 600,000 (US$600) for VVIP, Ks 200,000 (US$200) for VIP, and Ks 60,000 (US$60), Ks 45,000 (US$45), and Ks 25,000 (US$25) for the general public. 

An audience with the deva

The Museum of World Culture in Barcelona, Spain, has just opened its doors as a massive repository of cultural and artistic collections that illustrate different non-western cultures of Africa, Asia, America and Oceania.  

More than 700 pieces on display at the museum come from the personal collection of the late Albert Folch-Rusinol (1922-1988) as well as the Ethnological Museum of Barcelona.

Yangon celebrates International Women's Day


To celebrate International Women’s Day this Sunday, the week-long Yangon Women's Festival is being organised to inspire and celebrate Myanmar women’s achievements.

The festival brings together female artists, performers and professionals in an attempt to remove the stigma attached to society’s views on women and to promote gender equality in Myanmar through role models as a way to educate and inspire young ladies. 

Myanmar to witness the ‘Big Bang’ in July

Popular South Korean idol group Big Bang will hold a concert in Myanmar in July, according to Living Sound Entertainment.

"We are planning to hold it at a venue with a seating capacity of between 40,000 and 50,000 fans. Only then, it will be convenient for us," said Jaw Maran of Living Sound Entertainment. 

Living Sound Entertainment, which organised the band's labelmate 2NE1's concert in Myanmar last year, is currently looking for a suitable venue to stage the concert.

Funfairs to mark Bogyoke’s birthday

The opposition National League for Democracy in collaboration with many performers will hold funfairs to mark the centenary of Bogyoke Aung San’s birthday in Yangon for three days beginning on Union Day, February 12.

General Aung San’s Birthday Organising Committee held a press conference at the Royal Rose in Yangon to describe the proceedings.

Where puppetry meets cinema

Myanmar and Japan artists are joining forces to make a feature film about traditional Myanmar puppetry. Based on a classic puppet song entitled “Sone Nant Thar Myaing”, “Sorrow” will be co-directed by Zarganar and two leading Japanese producers.

Photo exhibition explores Gen Aung San’s legacy

To mark the centenary of Bogyoke (General) Aung San’s birth, which falls on February 13, a 5-day exhibition of rare photos of Gen Aung San was staged at the offices of the National League for Democracy (NLD) on Strand Road in Mawlamyaing Township, Mon State. The photo exhibition will be hosted on a rotational basis by different regional branches of the NLD across the country.

Traditional craftsmen given technical and financial support

Selected craftsmen from six regions will be provided with technical and financial assistance by  the “From Craft to Art” project in an effort to lift the standard of traditional handicrafts.

Waziya II cinema to undergo digital conversion

Waziya Cinema II in Hlaingthaya Township, on the outskirts of Yangon, will undergo a three-month makeover as a digitally equipped three-screen mini theatre.

When the cinema reopens in April, Zaw Min of Mingalar Cinema Group and the organisation's Administration, Distribution and Exhibition layer will take over the operation of Waziya Cinema II from the Myanmar Motion Picture Organisation (MMPO).
