Yangon police fight drug trade ahead of Thingyan

Yangon Region police have enhanced their efforts to curtail the trade of opium and sex-stimulation drugs since March 7 in order to reduce crimes in the region during the Thingyan festival.

Police Col Pyae Sone said: “We are currently working to prevent and educate people on the trading of opium and sex-stimulation drugs. We have been inspecting automobiles every evening since March 7 before and during the water festival.”

Alcohol sales will also be regulated during the water festival. There were 174 crimes during last year’s Thingyan festival in Yangon Region in which 16 people died and 356 were injured. Most were fights that broke out after heavy alcohol consumption.
