Tenders for new flyover projects to open

The Yangon Region government announced that it will open clean and fair tenders for three new flyover construction projects in Yangon.The regional government has allocated Ks 54.35 billion to build flyovers at 8-mile junction, Tamwe junction and Kokkine junction in the 2015-16 fiscal year, of which Ks 22.5 billion will be used for Tamwe junction, Ks 16.45 billion for 8-mile junction and Ks 15.4 billion for Kokkine junction.The regional government plans to hold an open tender at the end of March. To ensure the best results, the government will consult with engineers, architects and legal advisors.“The call for bids will be announced through state-owned newspapers at the end of this budget year,” an official from the regional government said.In previous flyover projects, Shwetaung Co was commissioned to build the Hledan flyover; Capital Development Co to build the Shwegondine flyover; and FMI Co to build the Bayintnaung flyover. Last year, Capital Development Co was commissioned again to build the Myaynigone flyover.Many criticised the government for granting two flyovers projects to Capital Development Co. Critics also said future projects should be granted to more experienced contractors.Since 2011, city authorities have been in the process of building flyovers to alleviate the worsening traffic conditions in Yangon, Myanmar’s commercial hub.
